I have a background in child development psychology, and humanistic and people centred counselling. I think my background has a big influence on my work both with people and their dogs today. I love to guide and motivate people, I enjoy helping people achieve their dog training goals.
My passion for dogs and their welfare is deep rooted and started in my earilest childhood. People even when I was only about 6 years old said I had an amazing ability to contect with and understand dogs (as well as other non-human beings). I have over 25 years experience of training dogs, and have worked within rescue, for local vets and have acted as dog behaviour advisor for training clubs. Before setting up independently in Ealing in 2015 as Canine School for Skills. Canine School for Skills has gone from strength to strength, winning consecutive awards yearly for excellence. And has been voted best dog training business in Ealing area in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
An early influence was Ian Dunbar – he was forward thinking in his time, 1980s/early 1990s – when most trainers were busy choking dogs by their leads to make them sit, he was trying to show the world just how easy it was to get a dog into a sitting postion without even laying a finger on the dog. Later I was educated under the amazing Sarah Whitehead a true champion in effective non-punishment based training, she continues to inform and inspire me even now. I am proud to say I am apart of her inner circle!
I still attend lectures yearly by the most forward thinking canine behaviour specialists in the world, to keep myself up to date with latest behaviour science findings and keep my services relevent. My specialist fields are the prevention of problem behaviour and aggression in puppies and adolescent dogs. And confidence building and rehabilitation of fearful and timid dogs.
I hold qualifications/have education in:
•Behaviour Problems: Assessment and Methodology
•Factors Affecting Canine Behaviour and Principles of Learning Theory through OCN
•Canine Aggression & Rehabilitation
•Separation Anxiety in Dogs
•Assessment and Rehabilitation of Rescue Dogs
•Dog Behaviour & Cognition
•Canine Body Language
•Canine Communication Signals
•Behavior Adjustment Training
•Predation in Family Dogs
I have studied with (among others…):
•The Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (promoting high quality, ethical and science based Dog Training)
•IMDT Behaviourist (providing education on diagnosis, treatment, medication and criteria in dogs )
•Think Dog (headed by lecturer and behaviour counsellor Sarah Whitehead)
•SIRIUS® Dog Trainer Academy (run by veterinarian, behaviorist and dog trainer Dr Ian Dunbar)
•Duke University (Course headed by Brian Hare. Associate Professor in the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology – Animal Cognition )
I am fully insured and committed to continuing professional development.
Responsible Class Management for Wellbeing
Canine School for Skills classes are designed to be fun, family friendly, informative and ultimately very rewarding for all involved. Using the most up-to-date knowledge and ethical training techniques – you can have a happy polite dog that walks nicely on the lead, doesn’t leap up at strangers, and is generally a socially well adjusted companion you can happily take anywhere. What’s more your dog will enjoy complying with your requests. There is no need to have a battle of wills!
We have a complete ban on choke chains and other coercive or punitive techniques, in accordance with the APDT Code of Practice.
Training exercises are explained in detail verbally and by demonstration. No one should be struggling to teach their dog in a packed noisy class, feeling unmotivated and undervalued so Canine School for Skills purposely limits the number of dogs per class (5 – 8 maximum, depending on course type), and carefully ensures the dogs are suitable for the training class environment. This means lessons must be booked and paid for in advance to avoid missing out. And you and your dog can progress over the weeks in a stable welcoming environment. Classes are typically booked in six week blocks and should you enjoy the classes so much that you want to go further in training your dog, you will have the chance to be invited to exclusive regular classes that are run in terms.
Appropriate Socialisation and Confidence Building for Puppies
Canine School for Skills puppy classes are all about quality time, no time is wasted.
Many owners enrol their dogs into typical club run puppy obedience classes for them to be taught sit, down and heel but these dogs still go on to develop completely avoidable behaviour problems. As puppy obedience classes are often run by instructors with little knowledge of the importance of the psychological development stages of puppy and adolescent dogs. Not having a background in the study of behaviour, they cannot spot potential serious issues arising (fear of people/other dogs, trust issues around toys, food or handling, etc.) let alone help to prevent or fix problems.
Canine School for Skills classes are designed to enable your puppy to grow up to be well-mannered, confident and resilient with helpful exercises and the correct advice (founded in academic knowledge of canine behaviour and learning) to prevent/overcome problems at this most vital stage in your dog’s life. The number of puppies in attendance is limited, to ensure that everyone gets enough individual attention.
Pups will learn how to sit calmly, settle down and offer ‘keep still’ behaviour for examination, along with plenty of trust building exercises to avoid future problems: such as guarding items, separation distress and grooming issues that are all too common in dogs deprived a good education Your puppy will also learn frustration tolerance to avoid noisy attention barking and destructiveness. And self-control so your dog won’t steal food right off your plate, knock over the kids or run away with your best socks. As well as all the basic obedience cues (commands). With all important advice on toilet training, play biting and much more too.
